Everyone may be talking about the upcoming rematch between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen, but we cannot forget about the trilogy bout between Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin. The first two fights between Ortiz and Griffin were extremely close, with each fighter holding one victory via razor-thin decision. Both contests followed a similar pattern: Ortiz attempted to utilize his wrestling and ground-and-pound, while Forrest tried to sprawl and outwork his foe on the feet. However, we predict that their fight at UFC 148 on Saturday night will unfold differently than the first two. Ortiz will likely attempt to stand and bang with Griffin rather than consistently trying to bring the fight to the floor. He’ll favor this strategy due to the recent strides he has made with his stand-up game and the questions surrounding Griffin’s chin (Griffin’s last three losses have come via KO or TKO). Additionally, this strategy will alleviate the cardio problem that has plagued Ortiz in recent fights, as fighting on the feet is usually a lot less tiring than continuously working for takedowns.
Given Tito’s improvement in the stand-up and how terrible Forrest’s striking looked against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 134, there is a solid chance that Ortiz lands a big shot during an exchange and finishes Griffin with strikes. What is more likely though, is that Forrest uses his length and his superior pace/conditioning to take another decision.
